Fatigue fracture of the sacrum

Sacral insufficiency fracture

Fatigue fractures of the sacrum are caused by diminished bone quality, for example as a result of osteoporosis (age-related, cortisone therapy) or tumours. They occur spontaneously or secondary to minor trauma. In over 70% of cases, the fracture occurs on both sides.

The condition is usually diagnosed late, often after a long period of suffering, or is not diagnosed at all. In the Spinal Department, we focus on this issue very intently. We have developed our own treatment algorithm and surgical method for treating fatigue fractures of the sacrum.

A fatigue fracture of the sacrum is characterised by lower back pain which gets worse with strain. The pain frequently radiates to the groin and/or thigh. The symptoms can be of gradual onset or start suddenly. In some cases, patients are unable to walk. A fatigue fracture is diagnosed through clinical examination, supported by X-rays, CT and MRI.

We always initiate treatment by trying to follow a conservative approach. With appropriate pain therapy, the patient is mobilised by our physiotherapists and if necessary an orthosis is adapted.

If low-pain mobilisation cannot be achieved, we recommend surgical treatment.

We carry out a newly developed, minimally invasive stabilisation procedure on the sacrum. The patient can mobilise immediately after surgery. The in-patient stay is around 5 days after surgery.
