Infections of the spinal column are rare. If the spinal disc is affected, this is known as spondylodiscitis (inflammation), while if the vertebra itself is affected, it is known as spondylitis. A common cause of infection is the transfer of bacteria from another site of infection (e.g. lung inflammation, urinary tract infection, open wounds).

Rarely, they are caused by injections carried out close to the spine. Predisposing factors include: Diabetes, obesity, alcohol dependence, immunosuppression. Pus formation can lead to loosening of the disc, abscess formation in the muscles or in the spinal canal (epidural abscess) and even the “dissolution” of adjacent vertebrae. The symptoms are usually non-specific and range from general tiredness, episodes of fever and back pain to signs of paraplegia.

Die konservative Therapie kann bei unkomplizierten Verläufen durch Ruhe und Einnahme eines Antibiotikums erfolgen.

Surgery is required when:

  • Conservative treatment has failed
  • Abscesses form
  • There are neurological deficits
  • There is bone destruction that jeopardises stability
