Lumbar spinal column stenosis

Lumbar column

Lumbar spinal canal stenosis refers to a circumscribed narrowing of the spinal canal at the lumbar spine level. This can lead to compression of the spinal cord, nerve roots or nerves. Common causes of this are signs of wear and tear, and in rare cases acute injuries or tumours.

The symptoms occur depending on the location and extent of the stenosis. Pain that increases under strain, altered sensation and problems with urination and defecation can occur, as well as muscle paralysis right through to paraplegia.

Conservative treatment is possible in many cases with the exception of the signs of paraplegia mentioned above.

Surgical treatment is carried out when:

  • Conservative treatment has failed
  • There is increasing muscle weakness
  • The pain cannot be controlled with medications
  • In an emergency: Urinary and faecal incontinence as well as saddle anaesthesia
